But if Carlsbad is “a good place to retire” won’t this sort of urban art scare the olds?! We’re weaponizing the youth with spray paint, get off my lawn you damn kids!!

I think it looks great. Maybe it’ll give Carlsbad more of an Encinitas vibe.

Maybe it’ll give Carlsbad more of an Encinitas vibe.

You’re not trying to start up one of those Carlsbad vs. Encinitas fights, are you??? 😆

Think of the differences regarding the beach.

Every oceanfront house in Carlsbad has easy access to the sand. In Encinitas, there are maybe a handful of houses with direct access to the sand without having to climb a few flights of stairs.

For those east-of-5 folks, the access to the beach in Carlsbad is plentiful. Park anywhere along Ocean Street, on any of the tree streets, or around Terramar and enjoy an easy hop down a concrete staircase to the sand. There are the two good-sized public parking lots at Tamarack and Ponto, and you can even camp out for a week at S. Carlsbad State Beach.

Encinitas has one parking lot at Moonlight, and that’s it (Swami’s doesn’t count – it’s always full). If you want to get to the sand in other spots, you have to earn it. Parking is very limited, and making your way down the 80 feet of steps/trails is a challenge for many.

As a result, do Encinitas folks appreciate their beach more? Probably. There are more surf spots too.

There is so much beach in Carlsbad that you can take it for granted.

If, as the narrator declares, those murals are creating/defining the culture of Carlsbad, the “documentary” is an unintentional black comedy featuring another “fall of man”: A small, willfull collective drop of one ring of the ladder of civilization.

That is, whenever a society celebrates its own mediocrity, it’s already in decay.

A reader may retort, “Daytrip, why you be trippin’ on these poor people, all happy, on they bicycles, with they spray cans? They don’t know nuthin’. They just be tryin’ ta have them a nice day, an draw they cartoons! And you be all sarcastic, and negative and things! You ain’t drawin’ nuthin’. Left up to you, them walls would all be blank!”

I would cheerfully lift my non-fat, no foam Starbucks latte to them and respond, “indeed,”
