Rental Scam

Written by Jim the Realtor

This is the second time someone has taken my photos and placed rental ads hoping to dupe tenant prospects into sending $1,000 by FedEx with the promise of sending keys later.

I guess from now on as part of your staging tactics you should include pictures of random people to make it look like it is occupied.

It only takes one fool to send money to the scam artists to keep this going.

Get the FBI involved…that’s wire fraud, a felony.

the scammers are everywhere. you should see craigslist. I sold a car recently and I would get emails daily wanting to know if it was still available. Once you respond they have your email and the spamming begins. They were also texting me constantly. you have to be careful.

Had it happen to me on a rental in the Phoenix area. It showed up on Zillow. I sent them a request to remove it and saved a copy for my records.

I’m increasingly concerned about using contractor lock boxes for exactly that reason. Someone that can get the key and “leave it under the mat” for their prospective victims can do a lot more damage.

    Jim,

    Thanks for posting this.

There are an army of thieves out here. It’s amazing.

Here in Atlanta, there seem to be groups of people who do this. The other scam or crime operating here are people who just take over a home and claim that the bank can’t prove it owns the property (which may be true) so no one owns it. So they physically take over the property. They usually wind up renting the property to some unsuspecting family.

We still have a lot of homes in foreclosure in the Atlanta metro area.

I Googled the phone number 910-250-9276. Looks like this scammer is active all over the country.

You should watermark your photos with the realty name, site address and/or phone number, there are free sites and software that allow you to do this. Maybe a watermark along the bottom or the corner, or somewhere.

Everybody reads bubbleinfo.com. I suspect Kaos and Control agents do too!
